Hacienda Riquelme Golf is a real treasure, once you play it you are already thinking about going back. It is a course that you fall in love with, almost all the holes seem obtainable, and we dream of playing to our handicap, but as you advance, you discover that it is, as beautiful and fun, as it is difficult to conquer. The greens of Hacienda Riquelme Golf are wide and many of them are raised, which makes access to them difficult. In addition, all the greens have several levels which allow a very creative placing of the flags. The key is not to reach the green, but to put the ball in the right place to make the fewest number of putts.

However, playing golf at Hacienda Riquelme is a totally different experience, both by its topography where large fairways predominate with gentle slopes, and for its beautiful, but at the same time, very demanding game route with five large lakes and large numbers of bunkers, which are the hallmark of this course, covering an area of 71 hectares with a stunning mountain backdrop and panoramic views of the coast.

On Hacienda Riquelme, all of the residential properties are set back and further away from the course compared to some other golf complexes, giving a greater feeling of space. Hacienda Riquelme Golf offers ample fairways, combined with bunkers and hard-to-approach greens, all ready to complicate your game - this is a fun course that will bring the best shots out of every player. The course has been sculptured on land, which was once olive groves, and many mature trees have been retained in strategic positions. Whilst the fairways are quite expansive, the bunkering is prolific, capaciously cavernous with some almost 10 feet deep. With wide fairways, players have plenty of space to maneuverer their shots through the natural hazards.

The great diversity of the bunkers and their positioning add plenty of difficulties and require dexterity when playing them as some of the bunkers are up to 3 meters deep. The subtle and random contours of the greens give special importance to the short game. Its wide fairways gives all golfers the opportunity to enjoy the course. With wide fairways, players have plenty of space to maneuverer their shots through the natural hazards.

The golf course weaves its way through and around groves of olive trees, and five large lakes. Three of the large lakes come into play on six holes, and the golf course is complemented with lush landscaping, further enhancing both the golf experience as well as the extended views from the surrounding development.
Taking advantage of the site's larger scale, the course features wider-than-average fairways, allowing players plenty of room to play, whilst creating numerous strategic options. This means that many of the holes border other golf holes, and not housing, creating a more open, natural golf experience but maintaining a level of privacy for golfers.

The boldly contoured greens are sure to be the most talked-about feature of the course. The greens of Hacienda Riquelme Golf are wide and many of them are raised, which makes access to them difficult. At first glance, the greens appear to be generously sized.

However, many greens are multi-tiered, and broken into several sections, by strong elevation changes. Additionally, the greens also feature numerous subtle random contours and rolls, further complicating putting, making it crucial golfers play to the correct section of the green, in order to set up the easiest possible putt.

The unique bunkering creates a dramatic look, sure to set Hacienda Riquelme Golf apart from other courses. Many of the large rugged bunkers are very deep, with sand flashing, in places, up to three meters deep. The edges of the bunkers are cut in a jagged manner, further adding to their distinctiveness, whilst accenting the rugged nature of the course.

In an interesting contrast to the other GNK Golf Circuit courses, Hacienda Riquelme Golf's playing surfaces has a novel feature as it has been grassed with the latest PaspalumVaginatum Supreme variety to make golf more sustainable on a national level. The course also stands out for being one of the first golf courses in continental Europe to use Paspalum on its entire surface - tees, fairways, roughs and greens. This variety of grass has many similarities with the Bermuda grass, but it tolerates a high salinity in its irrigation water, decreasing the need for large amounts of freshwater. as well as being resistant to drought and high temperatures. It is also more competitive against weeds than similar grasses. Weeds can be controlled by the application of saltwater, in which weeds will die and the grass will survive. This leads the grass to stay in tip-top condition all year round, with less water usage.

During the winter months, the cooler temperatures (especially during the night) and the shorter days with fewer hours of sunlight, means the Bermuda grass used by nearly all the golf courses becomes dormant. The dormant grass becomes brown in colour. It’s important for players to know that the grass has not died or is lacking in water or maintenance. All of these features combine to give Hacienda Riquelme an older look and feel, establishing the resort as one of the most unique stops along the GNK Golf Circuit.

Unlike other courses in the GNK portfolio, this golf course will punish if you stray off the clearly defined fairways and grassy areas. The challenge isn’t solely confined to keeping the ball on the fairway, though. Riquelme has some of the most severe bunkering ever encountered, in terms of depth, placement, and sheer quantity, and the undulations on the greens make finding the right section a priority.

There is nothing unfair about this golf course, but if you’re playing good golf and hitting the ball in the right areas, it’s perfectly feasible to notch up a good score. As with almost all golf courses, we cannot deny that there are some relatively nondescript holes, but the vast majority are brilliantly designed and individual in their character. The large, sprawling greens are even-paced and are maintained in superb condition, and the designers should be highly acclaimed for fashioning so many good holes out of this otherwise barren, flat, and water-deprived portion of land.

Los greenes, de contornos audaces, serán sin duda la característica más comentada del campo. Los greenes de Hacienda Riquelme Golf son anchos y muchos de ellos están elevados, lo que dificulta el acceso a los mismos. A primera vista, los greenes parecen de tamaño generoso.

Sin embargo, muchos greenes tienen varios niveles y están divididos en varias secciones por fuertes cambios de elevación. Además, los greens también presentan numerosos contornos y giros sutiles y aleatorios, lo que complica aún más el putt y hace que sea crucial que los golfistas jueguen en la sección correcta del green para que el putt sea lo más fácil posible.

El bunkering único crea un aspecto dramático, seguro de Hacienda Riquelme Golf aparte de otros cursos. Muchos de los grandes y escarpados bunkers son muy profundos, con destellos de arena, en algunos lugares, de hasta tres metros de profundidad. Los bordes de los bunkers están cortados de forma dentada, lo que añade aún más a su carácter distintivo, al tiempo que acentúa la naturaleza agreste del campo.

En un interesante contraste con el resto de campos del Circuito GNK Golf, las superficies de juego de Hacienda Riquelme Golf tienen una característica novedosa, ya que han sido céspedadas con la última variedad PaspalumVaginatum Supreme para hacer el golf más sostenible a nivel nacional. El campo también destaca por ser uno de los primeros campos de golf de Europa continental en utilizar Paspalum en toda su superficie: tees, calles, roughs y greenes. Esta variedad de césped tiene muchas similitudes con la hierba Bermuda, pero tolera una alta salinidad en su agua de riego, disminuyendo la necesidad de grandes cantidades de agua dulce. además de ser resistente a la sequía y a las altas temperaturas. También es más competitiva contra las malas hierbas que otras gramíneas similares. Las malas hierbas pueden controlarse mediante la aplicación de agua salada, en la que las malas hierbas morirán y la hierba sobrevivirá. Esto hace que el césped se mantenga en perfectas condiciones todo el año, con un menor consumo de agua.

Durante los meses de invierno, las temperaturas más bajas (especialmente durante la noche) y los días más cortos, con menos horas de luz solar, hacen que el césped Bermuda utilizado por casi todos los campos de golf entre en estado latente. La hierba inactiva adquiere un color marrón. Es importante que los jugadores sepan que la hierba no se ha muerto ni le falta agua o mantenimiento. Todas estas características se combinan para dar a Hacienda Riquelme un aspecto más antiguo, estableciendo el complejo como una de las paradas más singulares a lo largo del Circuito de Golf GNK.

A diferencia de otros campos de la cartera de GNK, este campo de golf castigará si se desvía de las calles claramente definidas y las zonas de hierba. Sin embargo, el reto no se limita a mantener la bola en la calle. Riquelme tiene algunos de los bunkers más severos jamás encontrados, en términos de profundidad, colocación y cantidad, y las ondulaciones de los greens hacen que encontrar la sección correcta sea una prioridad.

No hay nada injusto en este campo de golf, pero si estás jugando un buen golf y golpeando la bola en las zonas adecuadas, es perfectamente factible anotar una buena puntuación. Como en casi todos los campos de golf, no podemos negar que hay algunos hoyos relativamente anodinos, pero la gran mayoría están brillantemente diseñados y tienen un carácter individual. Los greens, grandes y extensos, son uniformes y se mantienen en magníficas condiciones, y los diseñadores deberían ser muy elogiados por haber creado tantos buenos hoyos a partir de esta porción de tierra que, de otro modo, sería estéril, llana y carente de agua.
